Konjunktiv II is German's “would/could” mood. You need it for politeness (“I would like…”), for wishes, and for hypothetical or unreal situations (“if I had time…”). There are two ways to form it.
1. würde + infinitive — the everyday workhorse
For most verbs, use the conjugated form of würde plus the infinitive at the end. This is the form you'll use most in speech.
Ich würde gern nach Italien fahren.
I would like to travel to Italy.
Was würdest du machen?
What would you do?
2. Short forms — use these, not würde, for the common verbs

✗Ich würde gern einen Kaffee haben.
✓Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.
With haben, sein, können use the short form — not würde.
✗Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich sein glücklich.
✓Wenn ich reich wäre, wäre ich glücklich.
Use wäre, not würde sein.
